Welcoming Fall!

On Saturday, the girls and I had a special outing. A friend from church had invited us to a Fall Festival hosted by the "Pound House" as it's called in the community.

The Pound House is the house of one of the first settlers in the area. It was built by a doctor and remained in his family until it was donated to the community to use and take care of. Since only family members had ever lived there, many antique and heirlooms remain in excellent condition and are now displayed in the house for visitors to see.

The fall festival is a celebration of fall as well as a peek into what life was like in the 1850's.  There were demonstrations on soap making, candle dipping, quilting, weaving on a loom, spinning fiber from sheep and lamas into thread, cooking, shucking corn and using a grinder to make cornmeal,  period games children played, a petting zoo that contained livestock that would have been raised on the homestead, and wagon rides. In addition to all these things, there were also many crafts the kids could do, like making a corn husk doll, learning to make paper boats, writing with quills, and making a bonnet out of wall paper! Ice cream and face painting rounded out the day.

The girls had so much fun. As we were leaving, they all said they couldn't wait until next year to go again.

I put the photos from the day into a slideshow since there were so many.

Oh and for those of you worried about the boys, they enjoyed a day of college football watching. I think they had as much fun as we did.
