Nesting By Night

I have now entered into what most pregnancy books refer to as the "nesting" phase of pregnancy. Basically it's just a term authors like to use to refer to the time in pregnancy when an expectant mother decides it's time to prepare her "nest" or home for the impending arrival of the new baby.

Now there have been some projects that I've wanted to get done around the house that are easy to do while the girls are up and running around. For example, cleaning out my laundry room (including vacuuming and mopping around the washer and dryer) was a fairly easy thing to accomplish. And now every time I walk by that room it makes me smile because it's SO neat and organized in there.

But my current set of projects? Well, they are not kid-friendly at all, so I've been working on them at night.

As I mentioned before in another post, we're in the process of swapping furniture from Adrianne and Riley's room into Emmaline and Little Brother's room, including the toddler bed. This weekend, one of Matt's "to-dos" was to go to Ikea and purchase the twin size bed and mattress that Riley will get to sleep on. However, the bed we picked out was an unfinished wood and I want it to match Adrianne's bed SO I will be staining the wood to match. Not exactly the kind of project you want little kids around. I'm also re-painting both the nightstand and chest of drawers (again another job that goes more smoothly without kid's "helping") to match the white crib in Emmaline's room.

Because of the nature of the projects (potentially lots of fumes from paint and stain), I need plenty of ventilation, so I'm trying to do both these projects outside. The problem is it's HOT outside right now, and the weather outlook for the next week doesn't get any better, with the temperature staying at 100+. Which makes the ideal time for working outside right around when the sun is going down (so about 8:30ish, which just so happens to coincide with the girls' bedtime!).

However, the trade-off for working in less than 100+ degree heat? Mosquito bites. Lots and lots of mosquito bites. And apparently the only thing that mosquitoes love more than dinning off of me is feasting off a PREGNANT me. I kid you not, after two night's worth of working on my projects, I have 38 mosquito bites. I counted them!

So does anyone have any tips for keeping the mosquitoes at bay that doesn't involve slathering yourself in chemicals?

have you seen this website: www.cosmeticdatabase.com? just did a search for bug repellant and got a few hits. you could also try the Off fan. it's like something you clip to your belt. I have no idea what chemicals are involved but at least you don't spray them on your skin! I am the same way, bug spray is terrible! I am lucky though and mosquitos don't like me! I'm surprised, usually they stay away from vegetarians! ;) I think I might just not be allergic to them b/c I still get bit, just not the red bumps afterwords. anyway, ramble ramble... good luck with all of your projects! I wish I had an ounce of your motivation!

Thanks Megs for the suggestion! Yup, comseticdatabase.com was my go-to site when trying to find a good (SAFE!) sunscreen to use on the girls. It was late last night and I was tired so, today I'll try to do a little more internet digging and see what I can find about natural stuff that will keep the mosquitoes at bay. There's got to be something that will work (I'm thinking some combo of essential oils?). Oh and don't worry, you'll get your own dose of nesting instinct when it's YOUR turn!!! Yay!
