The things I do to pass time

Still no job news to report.

School is going well with the girls. Today they had fun doing some painting outside with water colors. And I've FINALLY gotten through to Adrianne that there IS such a number as 15 and you can't just skip it as you count on your way to 20! She's so smart, so sometimes it really baffles me when she has trouble with seemingly simple things like that.

Emmaline is keeping me on my toes too. She is very speedy at crawling now (or her version of it anyway) and if I don't construct a baby obstacle course to keep her contained, she'll be half way across the room before I can even catch her! She's also begun pulling up on objects. Her favorite thing to pull up on is me (of course) but she also likes to stand up to play. And just today I saw her actually start cruising while holding onto furniture! She only took two steps, but that's how it always starts. This kid just doesn't want to stay little for very long!

So as busy as things have been around here, I still have been getting bored. So I've started working on a couple of various projects.

The first one I started was making a braided rag-rug that will probably go in one of the bathrooms. Since we've moved I've been wanting a rug to go there, but never found anything I really liked enough to buy. Well, I had these old sheets that we had no use for and they were just sitting in the linen closet so I decided "why not?" and proceeded to cut them up so I could turn them into rugs. I've finished doing all the braids, but I haven't finished getting the braids shaped and tacked together.

The OTHER project I worked on to kill some time was crocheting a wool soaker to go over Emmaline's diapers. All the old people will already know this, but back in the day, people used to use wool covers to go over diapers because the wool keeps all the wetness from getting out and making all the clothes the baby is wearing wet. Wool is a breathable material and can also move with your baby, so it makes an ideal diaper cover. I've been wanting to try out a wool soaker for a while, but most of the ones that you can buy online (made by other people) were pretty pricey.

My grandmother taught me to crochet when I was very little. I never got very good at it, and I can honestly say up to this point I've only made very basic items such as small blankets, pot holders, a couple hats, and a scarf. I was really nervous about picking it up again, but decided crocheting my own soaker was probably the only way I was ever going to be able to get one to try out.

SO yesterday Riley and I walked down to this little local knit shop to see what they had and pick out some wool yarn for me to work with. I had a GREAT time walking there with Riley (it's really close to our house) since I hardly get to do anything just the two of us. She had fun picking out what colors to use as well as seeing the doggies the shop keeper had at the store. Then she had fun using the yarn-winder contraption that they had at the shop. It was a great little shop, with good prices, abundant selection, pleasant atmosphere, and helpful and friendly staff. I hope to visit them again in the future!

So after working on my project last night and a few hours this morning I was all finished.

Unfortunately for me......it's a little on the small side so while it fits on Emmaline for now, it's a pretty tight squeeze and I won't be able to use it for her night time diapers, which is what I really wanted it for. But at least now I have a better idea of what I'm doing and can make another (bigger) one later.
