So a few days ago, Adrianne and Riley worked with me to make their own books. They both dictated to me the stories they wanted to write, and then did the illustrations. Riley's story was about mermaids and Adrianne wrote an adventure about dinosaurs. Both stories came out really cute and I was actually quite surprised at some of the vocabulary and sentence structures the girls used in composing their stories. For example, Adrianne actually used the transition "suddenly" when writing her story. I was very impressed.
Well, yesterday Adrianne was bugging me to work on another story with her. I told her that I wasn't in the mood, and was busy working on other things so if she wanted to make another book she would have to do it herself. Somehow she went from wanting to write another book to making invitations to a party. Now Adrianne is SUCH a planner. She will get something into her head and then spend the next four hours planning and analyzing every detail. So she was trying to create the perfect party invitation. Only she doesn't know how to read yet, let alone write. So I was floored when she brought me a paper that read this:
"URNVTTOHOSPRD"
I know that LOOKS like gibberish, but since she was saying what she was trying to write out over and over again, I know what it says. It says "you are invited to (my- which she didn't include for some reason) house party." If you look at what she wrote (and add spaces in between words....need to work on that!) she was actually phonetically sounding out the words and trying to match up the sounds with the letters that make them. That is a HUGE pre-reading skill! I'm so excited because I was actually a little worried that it would be hard to teach her to read, or that she wouldn't get it, but now I'm actually eager to start and see how quickly (or not) she picks it up!
