On Saturday morning we all slept in. The girls had gone to bed pretty late on Friday night and when Emmaline got up early to eat, I just brought her in bed with Matt and I. She ate and then entertained herself by mouthing her hands and looking at her friend, the fan. Finally we all got up and started our morning activities. While I was getting the girls their breakfast, Matt decided to go for a run before it got too hot. So I made the girls some toast and "choca milk" as Riley calls it, then took Mozart outside. Well, when I went outside I saw this:
Yup, that's right a chicken! I was SO surprised to see it there. We have a completely fenced in back yard and there are no holes in the fence big enough for the bird to have gotten through (or so it seems), and our fence is pretty tall (it's over my head) so I don't think that the bird would have been able to fly that high. I STILL can't quite figure out how it ended up in our backyard, but it spent the majority of the day walking around the yard eating bugs. I did take it some water because it was SO hot out there, which it readily drank. It even took a nap underneath our tree for a little while. Of course the girls LOVED having a chicken in our yard. They even named it "Ellie". I really wanted to keep it (fresh eggs! free fertilizer! natural bug control!), but Matt didn't really want to. Well, that night we were going over to our neighborhood friends' house for dinner and when we got back, the chicken was gone. Of course I was bummed, although I know Matt was relieved he didn't have to be the bad guy who said we couldn't keep Ellie.
On Sunday we had a full day at church. Matt had the opportunity to play with the praise team. It was nice seeing him actually get to use his guitar and play again. Then Matt took the girls out to lunch while I had a meeting with a lady at church about taking over the Children's Ministry. We all ended up back at home where I think everyone except Matt took a nap. Then that night it was back to church for the once a month Sunday night service. That service is primarily a worship service where they offer communion. It was so nice to see my girls up front dancing as usual and it was the first time that Matt and I let Adrianne take communion. She really wanted to participate, and I took her into a back room and asked her a bunch of questions to make sure she understood what she was doing and she got all the answers right! It was SO exciting for her and for Matt and I as parents to watch our little girl take that step. We are SO PROUD of her!
