Fridays

There are so many things I really want to teach the girls. Sometimes it's hard for me to step back and prioritize what should be learned now vs. later on. I don't want to overwhelm them after all.

One thing I know the girls really enjoy doing is craft type projects. Anytime we've done anything in the past they have always had a blast. And they are always keenly interested in any projects I happen to be working on. For ages now they have been asking me to teach them how to sew or crochet.

So when I was brainstorming what I wanted this year's homeschool schedule to look like, I decided that I wanted Fridays to be easy on the books and instead take the time to do some sort of crafty project. This allows the girls the opportunity to learn new skills that might otherwise take a back burner to the 3 R's and more traditional studies.

In light of that, today we tackled learning a basic crochet chain stitch.

Following this tutorial, the girls made these bracelets:

Not too shabby for their first attempt at learning to crochet!

I will say it took a LOT of patience on my part to help them learn to hold the crochet hook the right way and practice making the chain. However towards the end of the first bracelet, they both seemed to get the hang of it and I really didn't have to even help them on the second one.

Next week I hope to tackle teaching them some additional stitches used in crochet.

So my girls are now on their way to becoming little craft-addicts like me. Sometimes it's fun passing down your vices to your children!
