I am so frustrated right now. Riley is JUST.NOT.GETTNG.IT.
At least not when it comes to math.
Oh sure she's gotten great at counting. She CAN add and subtract simple numbers IF she's allowed to use her fingers or draw dots to help her figure it out. But she cannot just do it in her head. And I always have to talk her through how to solve it. She doesn't ever remember on her own, even if it's something we've already been over before. And word problems? Forget about it!
I was planning on switching to a different curriculum for math next year, however I think I'm going to have to get both the K and 1st grade books for her to use. I had been debating whether or not we needed the lower level (the new math curriculum is a spiraling program where each lesson builds on the one before, so I need to make sure we've covered everything they did in the lower levels for it all to work) however all our recent troubles just sealed the deal for me. She deffinetly needs to go back over much of what we've been covering this year. I'm hoping that between the new curriculum and her being just a bit older things will start to click and she'll get that "a ha!" moment she REALLY needs so that we can move on.
And let's not even get started on her handwriting. It is atrocious. Her formation is awful and she has so many reversals. We WILL be doing a formal handwriting program next year, for sure.
So, there's a good chance that Riley will be repeating much of her kindergarten year.
*I should note here that while we'll be repeating some material, Riley isn't really behind per-se. Because of her late fall birthday she misses the cut-off dates and if she was attending public school she would be entering into kindergarten in the fall. So in that regard, she is AHEAD of where she should be, despite being behind in math. Make sense? And she's actually also truly ahead in science and reading because she excels in those two subjects.
