The girls had a good time for Halloween. I didn't want to spend a lot of money (read: any) on the costumes so we had to rely on a bit of scrounging, sewing, and plain old luck for the costumes the girls ended up wearing.
Riley went as the "Princess and the Frog". The dress that she wore had actually been an old dress of Adrianne's, which was both too small and torn. The sheer material had separated from the green part, and it had basically been hanging out in my sewing machine box just waiting on me to fix it. So I took the dress and reattached the sheer part, cropping it to look more like something a princess would wear. Then we scrounged around the house for a tiara and borrowed a frog to kiss (from Emmaline) and she was all set!
I really wasn't sure what we were going to do about Adrianne's costume. Of course when she found out the Riley was going to be a princess SHE wanted to be a princess too. I kept going back and forth about what she should be. Originally, I was planning on sewing her costume from scratch, however, as luck would have it, her costume fell right into our laps. When Matt's parents were here for a visit, they brought along some "dress up stuff" that his dad had bought on his trip to Iraq. He had purchased a traditional Iraqi outfit that the little girls wear and when they showed it to us, we all thought that it was so pretty! I had to fix several parts of it to make it usable (adding elastic, cutting out a neck hole in the lace part, widening the neck opening of the shirt) but it came out great. Adrianne LOVED it and told everyone that she was princess Jasmine, although to be honest, the hat made her look more like a gypsy then a Persian princess.
Since Emmaline didn't go trick or treating, she didn't really dress up. Well, at least she didn't dress up THAT MUCH. Since Adrianne's birthday falls so close to Halloween I had taken advantage of Matt being home on Saturdays to go do some birthday shopping for Adrianne. While I was out shopping, I ran across these super cute monster pajamas. They were really cheap ($6) and Emmaline really did need some more pajamas that had long sleeves since the nights have begun to get chilly around here. So I went ahead and picked them up. Oh and BONUS.....they glow in the dark! Of course the entire time she was wearing them Matt kept commenting that they were BOYS pajamas. I didn't care. She looked like a cutie!
This was the first year that we let Adrianne and Riley go trick or treating. Matt stayed home with Emmaline and passed out candy to the children who visited our house while Adrianne, Riley, and I went up and down our neighborhood with the family who lives near us. The girls were so good and it was funny to see how many grown ups can be such suckers to cute little girls dressed up. Riley quickly figured out that if she stood at the door smiling sweetly while holding her pillowcase open the person handing out the candy would loose track of exactly how many pieces they had given her, as they fussed over how cute she looked. Needless to say, the girls racked up on candy. Matt and I have had to be the selfless parents and try to help them eat all the candy up so it doesn't go to waste. Yes, being a parent DOES have it's advantages sometimes!
