Matt had the day off today so I convinced him that he should go to Target with the girls and I to pick up a few things that we needed. We were there, shopping along, putting things in our cart. Emmaline had just fallen asleep in her Snuggli, Riley was sitting in the cart Matt was pushing and Adrianne was being hyper and walking around with us. Well, while Adrianne was being goofy, she accidentally tripped and face-planted onto the hard floor at Target. She hit HARD. I mean HARD. SO hard we heard a huge "thud" and Matt swears he could feel the floor reverberate under his feet. As soon as she hit the floor, I cringed. Immediately Adrianne started crying/yelling in pain. Of course I was carrying Emmaline, so Matt scooped Adrianne up and sat her down on a chair in the furniture section. I was SURE she had busted all her teeth out and we would see a bloody mouth. (she was covering her whole mouth with her hand and crying). But when Matt moved her hand to look at her mouth (and teeth), he stuck his hand under her chin to bring her head up. Well, when he moved his hand we saw the blood. She had busted her chin open. DEEP. So I quickly swipe one of Emmaline's cloth diapers to start applying pressure to Adrianne's chin and stop the bleeding. While I was trying to get Adrianne calmed down, I told Matt to go ahead and check out and then we'd need to find an urgent care clinic to get stitches.
While I was trying to calm Adrianne down, a very nice lady came up to me to ask if I needed any help. She told me that there was an urgent care clinic in the same shopping center (Southpark Meadows). I was SO grateful she shared that information with me, because honestly, I had NO IDEA where to find the nearest clinic. Finally I got Adrianne calmed down enough for us to walk out of the store. Then we headed over to the clinic where they took care of Adrianne. While we were waiting for the Dr., the nurses cleaned out Adrianne's chin. When the Dr finally came in, she said that she thought they could just use the glue to get Adrianne's chin back together. Adrianne was really happy that she wasn't going to have to get any shots. However, when the Dr went to check, she said they were OUT of the glue-stuff so Adrianne WAS going to have to get stitches after all.
Adrianne was SO BRAVE while the Dr. did the lidocain shot. She didn't even cry. Well, she started to tear up, but I just had her look at me and she did fine after that. Then of course once her chin was all numb she was back to her regular self. I was very impressed with the Dr. She had great bedside manner and talked to Adrianne while she was doing the procedure. Well, while the Dr was putting in Adrianne's stitches, she had gotten about half way through sewing the laceration up (which measured 2cm), when one of the nurses came rushing in saying that a man had just brought his wife in who was having chest pains, having trouble breathing and had just gone unconscious. So of course the Dr. said she had to stop and take care of the other lady. It was so sad. We kept hearing the medical team calling the woman's name and telling her that she needed to breathe. The nurses were rushing around trying to get supplies and calling 911 to try to get EMS to transfer the woman to a hospital ER. Then we hear the ambulance arrive and the EMS workers trying to get the woman stabilized to transfer. Meanwhile nurses kept periodically coming into our room telling us that the Dr hadn't forgotten about us, but was just "extremly busy right now taking care of an emergency." I kept telling them that it was FINE and I completely understood. I mean, Adrianne was obviously in no serious trouble, while this other lady was presumably fighting for her life!
Finally things settled down and Dr came back into our room to finish stitching Adrianne up. I was AMAZED at how calm and collected she was. She acted like nothing had even happened. As she was working, her hands were steady. I know that she's probably done stitches thousands of times, but if I had gone through that kind of adrenaline rush helping to save someone's life, I'm sure I'd be shaking like a leaf afterwards.
Here's a pic of Adrianne's chin prior to sewing:
