For the longest time, I always wondered what the holiday "Boxing Day" was on calendars. Maybe a year or two ago, I "met" a Canadian online and she explained to me the tradition of Boxing Day.
Basically Boxing Day is the holiday that came about as a result of people gathering together items they no longer wanted or needed which were then boxed up and donated to charity after the Christmas holiday. I thought this was a BRILLIANT idea, as after Christmas I always feel overwhelmed by the amount of gifts my kids have received and the sheer quantity of stuff we seem to accumulate.
So today the girls and I have spent the day sorting through old toys, weeding out the ones they no longer wish to keep and then organizing the new ones they got this year. A lot of the toys will be taken to the local crisis pregnancy center, where I know they will be given to families in need. It's very refreshing to set the kids' rooms in order and I feel like we're off to a fresh start for the year.
