A Homemade Halloween

The girls were super excited that yesterday was Halloween. They had been looking forward to dressing up and going trick or treating for weeks. So for the big day to finally arrive was very satisfying for them.

This year, everyone in our family made their own costumes, even Matt!

Matt had a party to go to on Saturday night and he dressed up as a Rubik's cube. He made the cube out of a big cardboard box, black spray paint and then colored paper. I wish I had a picture of his costume because it turned out great.

Adrianne wanted to go as a rock star, so I knew her costume would be fairly low key. She just picked out a tee shirt (it was a warm evening) and some jeans and then we got to work on her props. We made a microphone out of a paper towel tube, black construction paper and silver glitter. Then using another cardboard box we had lying around the house, Matt cut out a guitar which we covered with wrapping paper and she decorated it herself with markers.

Rocking out on the guitar.

Riley wanted to be a ballerina and picked out pink and purple tulle to use in her tutu. I spent about an hour cutting and tying the tulle to an elastic waistband. Then that evening she picked out a shirt to wear with her tutu. Easy peasy!

This year was Emmaline's first year getting to actually go out and go trick or treating with the big girls. For her costume, she went as a cowgirl. I made her outfit out of some felt that was on sale and some red ribbon so it would match the cowgirl hat the girls already had. Then I made a hobby horse for her by making a stuffed horse head to go on top of a wrapping paper tube. It ended up turning out super cute even though she didn't want to "ride" on the horse and it ended up staying home!

With chaps, vest and hat, Emmaline is ready to saddle up!

Because Max is so little and I didn't know what the weather was going to be like, I didn't even bother dressing him up as anything. So while I took the girls out, Max and Daddy stayed home and passed out candy to all the kids who came to our house.

Holding down the fort with Dad: How Max spent his evening.

The girls and I visited about 25 houses before I decided that they had PLENTY of candy in their bags and we came on back home. Then they got to eat a few pieces of their loot and Adrianne helped pass out candy. Poor Riley was too scared to help her because she didn't like how some kids dress up as gory and scary things.

All in all it was a fun evening. I was very pleased with how the girls costumes came together and as a bonus for me, I know I spent under $10 total on the girls costumes. Not too bad at all!
