Homeschool......YUM!

So right now for our unit study in homeschool we are reading the book "How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World" by Majorie Priceman. So naturally it would only follow that for one of our daily lessons, the girls and I would actually MAKE an apple pie. Cooking, after all, falls under SO many different subjects: home-ec, math (fractions), science (if you think about it, all cooking is really an experiment waiting to happen), even writing (we, for example, discussed how a recipe is an example of a "how-to" essay, something that the girls will eventually be expected to write on their own in a couple of years.)

Now I cook and bake quite often, but the only pie I have ever made was a pumpkin pie. And considering there are about a thousand variations on how to make an apple pie, I was a little nervous that our pie would not turn out yummy. So yesterday when the girls and I assembled the apple pie, I held my breath as I stuck it in the oven, praying that it would turn out good. After all, the girls were SO excited they got to make the pie themselves, (the did everything besides roll out the crust and slicing the apples) I didn't want their first culinary masterpiece to be a flop.

But the pie DID turn out yummy and it was SO hard for this pregnant woman to hold off on eating any of it until after dinner. (We made the pie before lunch so I had to go the WHOLE DAY with a house smelling like yummy apple pie....torture I tell ya!) The girls were so proud of themselves and the great job they did.

I have to admit, as I ate my slice of apple pie, smothered in vanilla ice cream, I felt kind of sorry for all the kids who go to public schools because I doubt they EVER get to make apple pie for a school assignment. I guess apple pie is just one more perk to add to the list of reasons to homeschool!
